ITS 2017 – International Tsunami Symposium
International Tsunami Symposium will be held in Bali and Flores, Indonesia between 21-25 August 2017.
Committee Chairman’s message for ITS 2017 is as follows;
Dear Colleagues and friends,
I would like to welcome you to Bali and Flores, Indonesia for the 27th International Tsunami Symposium. This meeting brings together scientists, engineers and practitioners from all over the global to discuss the state of the art and the latest advances in tsunami science and engineering for better tsunami disaster preparedness, mitigation, and reconstruction.
The conference we will be held in Bali on August 21-23, followed by a field trip to Flores August 24-25. The field trip will bring us back to the scene of an event that occurred 25 years ago, when a large earthquake in northern Flores generated a killer tsunami that claimed 2.600 lives, destroyed 18,000 houses and caused economic losses not less than US$ 100 million. I believe this event is one of the first to trigger the activation of an International Tsunami Survey Team (ITST). The most remarkable remnants of damage due to the tsunami can be seen along the coast of Maumere Town and Babi Island. This time, we will have a chance to see what has happened on Babi Island and in Maumere in the 25 years since the tsunami. I hope you can join the field trip.
At the conference, we will cover 16 different topics spanning a wide range of tsunami-related topics. Thus, I believe this event will be very effective in helping us share knowledge, lessons and (of course) the latest findings in the science and technology of tsunamis, particularly after three major events in the last decade: the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Maule, Chile Tsunami and the 2011 East Japan Tsunami.
So, I look forward to your participation in this very important event and to meeting you at the 27th International Tsunami Symposium in Bali.
